Beerfest, it was.
We ran into Broken Lizard’s Kevin and Steve last night at the Yankees-Angels game in Anaheim. The Angels mercifully blew the game, giving us a high note to end our season on. Not the Yankees, me and Ronnie. Seriously, I’m done paying attention until pitchers and catchers report next March.
My last time at Yankee Stadium
Sar, Seanny and I went to see the Yanks take on the LA Angels. It was my first time in the bleacher section, and probably one of the best vantage points I’ve ever had of a Yankee game. In the end, Mo blew the lead, a true rarity. So it goes…

We agree to disagree on the topic of the greatest baseball team in the history of the universe…

Yo, I just left Stan’s…where are you?

We bro down with the only other dudes left in the parking lot…
Dancing With Death
It was an evening of epic proportions, an amazing show from an amazing vantage point, feeling like I was connected to one of my (our!) favorite bands ever, mourning with them over the loss of someone they loved more than words can describe, and at the end of the night, one of my adolescent heroes threw me a drumstick.

The next day, I reflected heavily upon the experience, listened to DMB all day long and asked myself why I was still buzzing so much? It occurred to me that the entire experience, from the freeway through the show, and home again, took me on a rollercoaster-riding confrontation of my emotions as they pertain to the topic of death.
At the very top of the show, warming up into their first song, a veritable warm-up jam leading into Seek Up, Dave turned around to drummer and fellow surviving DMB founder Carter Beauford, glaring at him, pulling him into the show, and telling him with his eyes, “I need you,” to which Carter responded, percussively, “I am with you.” Their unspoken resolve, an outpouring of macabre subtext, pulled me in immediately and launched me into the journey of a life celebrated. I was watching from the back corner of the stage, and in our small section, slightly obstructed, but as front row of behind-the-scenes as it comes, we saw what the rest of the capacity crowd in Staples Center could not…the eyes of two bandmates who hurt more than words can express.

There’s delusion in feeling that you’re a part of the band’s experience, but when I screamed “we’re with you!” to the band, I meant it, and they heard me…I felt like they poured their hearts out last night, summoned every bit of energy they had to pay tribute to a fallen brother and after nearly crying on the drive in and again while tailgating, I was more than willing to go for the ride. I believe last night was kindred, an uncanny set of circumstances that cannot be replicated, but needed to be acknowledged instead of ignored, and I milked the experience for every sentimental moment I could, taking with me one of the most beautiful, melancholy, and life-enriching experiences a fan could ever stand to gain.

Behind The Scenes: TAG Shoot

Man Vs. Horror

Immediately following the two year journey for my short film Trade, Matt Duggan approached me about shooting an episode for his online series, Man Vs.
This one was a Halloween release entitled Man Vs. Horror, a play on recent torture porn genre successes such as Saw. The real challenge was making the episode somewhat dark and haunting, while keeping it somewhat funny and true to the show’s roots, and less than two minutes in length. The lessons I learned from shooting and editing this webisode informed a great deal of the style and aesthetic choices (or non-choices) of the project that followed it–the short horror comedy Written By.
Man Vs. Dragon – Part I
I got to First AD for Matt Duggan while he shot Man Vs. Dragon Parts 1 & 2. We had a super fun time, shooting kickass martial arts sequences with Frank Krueger and Xin (the Urban Ninja) and the EMC martial arts team. These guys are so incredible, flipping and kicking, trained in stunts and very well versed in action filmography. Coordinating their actions with Matt and DP Kyosti Kauppinnen was a terrific exercise in filmmaking and a great lesson on maximizing use of your talent for the creation of on-screen tension.
SimulScribe “Liar” Viral Video
Two weeks prior to the iPhone release, SimulScribe hired me to shoot an Apple parody spot for YouTube that would play on the iPhone’s lack of true visual voicemail. SimulScribe actually transcribes your voicemails to texts, while visual voicemail absolutely does not. So we shot this spot to capitalize on iPhone keyword searches, as well as seed the blogosphere so fanboys and technorati could take note of SimulScribe’s superior product.
We rented out a sound stage with a giant cyclorama, and shot all sorts of fun material for the better part of a day, mining some real gold. In six hours, we shot six different spots, mainly because we had the place all day. This one was an alternate concept we shot for fun and later wound up seeding virally. In about two months, it had 20,000 views, most of which came the week of the iPhone launch.
